Brownies

What is a Brownie?

Brownies are girls aged from 7 to 10. The Brownie uniform is a yellow jumper, navy neckerchief, sash and woggle.

Brownies

What do Brownies do?

Brownies grow to a three-year journey programme that capitalises on this age group’s love of adventure and challenge. Brownies are detectives, discovering new things about themselves and the world they live in as they complete Interest Badges and collect their three Journey Badges – Detect, Investigate and Explore.

The activities used aim to develop the Brownie’s team-building and problem-solving skills, while promoting inclusion and empathy. The programme gives Brownies the ability to grow in their independence, and is reflected in opportunities for Brownie overnight holidays and camps, as well as days out and events with the other IGG branches.

Each Brownie will have the opportunity to earn a number of Interest Badges during her time in Brownies.  These badges show that a girl has developed a skill, knowledge and/or interest in a particular area.

Brownies

How do they do it?

When a girl joins Brownies she starts attending a weekly meeting, usually during school terms and from 1 hour to 1.5 hours a week, the length of time depends on the unit leader’s availability.

At the meeting a brownie becomes part of a group called a Six.  At meetings girls learn all about Brownies including the Song, Story, Promise, Brownie Law and Motto.  A Brownie then starts her journey by preparing to make her Brownie Promise. She begins to wear her uniform and learns how to use her Brownie Smile.  Once she has completed all the challenges in the “becoming a Brownie” journey badge, and has attended minimum 8 meetings, then she is enrolled as a Brownie and will receive her first badge – her Promise Pin.
