Octagon is Irish Girl Guides’ 14th International Camp, which will be held virtually from 31 July to 2 August 2021. Due to the global pandemic caused by COVID, the camp which was originally to be held in Clongowes Woods, in Clane, Co. Kildare has been adapted so that Octagon 2021 will happen in a variety of places in a variety of ways. It will be streamed from our host location of Dublin City University!

Octagon is a three-day event kicking off on Saturday morning 31 July and finishing on Monday evening 2 August.  Over 1,000 members of Irish Girl Guides (IGG) and our international friends representing 10 countries will be “camping” at home or locally, connected together via a programme of events and activities.

We are excited the Irish Girl Guides’ spirit enables us to find ways to join in the fun and stay connected – from our homes, from our campsites, from across the world.

Bookings are now closed. Any enquiries please email octagon@irishgirlguides.ie.

The theme for camp is Adaptability – how we engage with the world and each other.  Each camper will engage in a variety of activity sessions over the three days focused on learning more about the Sustainable Development Goals, STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Maths) and the Outdoors. Sessions will involve an online element and there will be plenty of challenges and outdoor activities that enable campers to learn new skills, explore new things and make new friends with other girls all over Ireland and with other WAGGGS members from around the world.  Participants will be asked to submit photos or video clips of their work and these will be integrated into ceremonies and our media streams. Demo videos will be available for participants to access any crafts/skills sessions after the live session so they can learn at their own pace.

A virtual camp means Octagon is taking place online with campers at home or at local venues. Activity sessions will be led via Zoom and ceremonies will be broadcast for all to take part in. We are delighted to partner with Dublin City University from where we will stream this event.

Camp Crew!

The Octagon Camp Team send a special thanks to all the many volunteers who are making camp possible by volunteering for the Camp Crew. Much of their work is going on behind the scenes and preparing for the activity sessions.

They have attended training sessions online to prepare for the event and have really given it their all. It’s hard not to be meeting in person for this event, so we thank them for their adaptability!

If you are interested in volunteering with Irish Girl Guides in future, please contact National Office at info@irishgirlguides.ie.
